Hi All,

It seems that somehow the password file has gotten
corrupted and I cannot login/su to root. I'm currently
looking for a backup of a passwd file that is not corrupt.
I started to have problems when trying to su to root outside
of the console, I could only login as root when I was at
the console and not su to it from my user id. Now, I can't
login as root at all. We are running AIX 4.3.3. How can
I reset the root passwd?

Thanks!

-Joe

Joe,

I assume that you can no longer su to root or login as root?

Can you rcp an /etc/passwd file from another server i.e. do you have trusted relationship?

If you cannot login or copy a file you will have to boot from the cd into maintenance mode and rectify the problem.

Cheers

Hi,

No, we don't have any other servers. If the restore does not work, I'll have to boot in maintenance mode. Thanks
for the tip. By the way, have you ever seen/heard of something like this happening?

see the /etc/security/user file and check the entries for root.. See whether su is enabled for other users
