When I try to telnet into the linux redhat server as root, I get the login prompt, I enter "root" and the password but I get the error message "login incorrect"
the log on the linux host i'm connecting to says "ROOT LOGIN refused on pty/0...
please advise.

default is normally to allow root local login only. check the man pages on your telnet client for instructions on changing this.

<marc> i wonder what will happen if i press this...[ul][li]please tell us if our suggestion has helped[/li][li]need some help? faq581-3339[/li][/ul]

You should always log in as a normal user and su if you need to do root tasks. Changing this to allow root logins will defeat the protection this was intended to provide and make your system an open target.

because it doiesn't send that root password in the clear over the network, amongs other things.

when someone asks for your username and password, and much *clickely clickely* is happening in the background, know enough that you should be worried.

Edit the /etc/securetty file.
Add the tty that you are trying to login on.
Example - pts/0
That will give you permission to login as root using telnet.
