Hello,

I'm getting a strange error when trying to connect to db2 v9.5 express c on Linux.

The error I'm getting is:

DB2 SQL Error: SQLCODE=-30082, SQLSTATE=08001, SQLERRMC=42;ROOT CAPABILITY REQUIRED;, DRIVER=3.50.109DSRA0010E: SQL State = 08001, Error Code = -30,082.

I did a search and all I have found is that it says that I'm using an invalid user/password, but I'm using the same user/pw that I have always used and I am able to ssh into the server that hosts db2 using that same user password.

Not that the user that I'm using is the same one that installed db2. And I am able to run selects if I connect to my database using the db2 command from the prompt.

Please help.

How do you connect? JDBC? ODBC ? or ... ?

Any messages in db2diag.log on client or server ?
Set the diaglevel to 4 and capture diag messages to get more info.

Also, try a client trace - cli trace or jdbc trace.

We are using JDBC. Also when we login to the Control Center, it isn't showing any databases, but when we look in the MODE0000 directory, it looks like all the databases are there.

It has something to do with authentication. We see messages in the logs saying unable to authenticate. The sysadmin and I were both looking into the issue and we compared this environment with an identical environment and as far as we can tell, both configurations are the same. The only differences that we can tell is that one environment is working fine and the other suddenly started failing on authentication.

I should have waited a few minutes before I posted. My Sysadmin just came to my desk to tell me that the issue was resolved.

For some reason the db2ckpwd was running as db2inst1 instead of root. Which makes sense because if the user is being authenticated at the OS level, root would be the only user that could do that. Hence the error message "Root Capability Required".
