I am running SQL 7.0 on Win 2000 and when I go into Enterprise Manager and then into my database and then to Users, Some of my users have "Permit" under the Database Access column but other users have a "Via group membership" under it. I know that I can add the ones that say "Permit" by simple right-clicking and adding them but I was wondering how the ones with "Via group membership" got in there? Thanks for the help.

SQL Server has two ways off Granting/Revoking/Denying access to a user. ROLES & USERS

When you create a user, you must assign them to a group. Most new users are added to public. By doing so, they inherit what ever permissions that group(ROLE) has.

Later on, or right away, depending on your environment, you may want to DENY/REVOKE a privelege to a certain user. To do so, you select whatever object you want to DENY/REVOKE them access to and select the option box until you see a red "X".

So, in short, the "Via Group Membership" means that a group(ROLE) that the user belongs to has been granted access to that object AND the user has not explicitly been GRANTED/REVOKED/DENIED access to that object.

HTH,

Mapman

Thanks for the help but that still does not tell me how the Users with "Via Group Membership" in the Database Access column were added. It must be an automatic process because I have not found a way to add Users with "Via Group Membership" manually. I can only manually add the Users that have the word "Permit" under the Database Access column. I don't know how it works exactly, maybe it's through the groups defined in Win 2000, I don't know?
