I WOULD LIKE TO SPECIFY ROLES FOR SOME USERS ie BACKUP AND SHUTDOWN ONLY. UNFORTUNATELY , SMIT INTERFACE DOES NOT SEEM TO WORK.

COULD ANY ONE HELP ME OUT ON WHAT I SEEM TO BE DOING WRONG?
PLEASE RESPOND ASAP.

ALTERNATIVELY, HOW DO I CREATE A "ROOT EQUIVALENT" ACCOUNT WITH EITHER RESTRICTED SHELL / RESTRICTED COMMAND USAGE.

I would recommend using sudo for people who need to run some functions as root. I would NOT set up a root equivalent shell. More information/download for sudo can be found here :
You should be able to set up Roles for users under ==> smitty ==> Security & Users ==> Roles.

Hope this helps!

The "ROLES" implementation in AIX 4.3.3 is not broken in SMIT, IS broken in AIX.

hi
you can copy required commands to any directory
and export PATH environment variable to only that
directory.
Be sure to implement restricted shell for the users
otherwise they can export PATH of thier own choice
overriding your settings.
