You could have some kind of dialer program running that you don't know about. You didnt post any ifo at all about the system you are running, so it's hard to say what is happening.
Check all the processes running at startup and look for anything that shouldn't be there....

Look for some program that is like a download manager. RealVideo players use to have one in their download. If you do connection sharing using ICS in Windows sometimes the modem will try to connect automatically if there is no connection for the network. I have had this problem when using ICS. It is all in the settings.

[tt]do you have ICQ, MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, or any other online messaging software installed? (sorry for any mispelled words) you'd have to configure these software so as not to automatically connect to the internet when they start. They usually startup with windows by default, and as such, will automatically dial up to the internet when the OS boots.
another thing is that your computer may have been infected with a virus, or your iternet settings is set to dial whenever an internet connection is not present.
well, you can provide further details... some of the veterans can help you even further then.
Thanks all for the quick responses, You are right I sure did not ask that question properly. First of all I am using an old gateway system about 5 years old, that used to have a winmodem in. I live out in the country and winmodems don't do well out here so I put in the Rockwell 56k voice, fax modem. Yes I did check all the start up programs, and I only use msn messenger, but I checked the settings, also settings for my ISP, and my register for any invalid links.
The other day we had a pretty bad thunderstorm, and I am using a rather old surge protector. I noticed the modem acting up after several rather close lightning strikes. I also read about lightning strikes in some of the other forums questions. I am convinced that the lightning strikes have dealt the modem a blow, at least damaged it some way or other. Now it is trying to tell me that it is connecting at 115200 kbs per secound, first time that has ever happened. I believe I will just replace the modem. Thanks for all your help.
