Rockwell 56K modem problem

This modem came with my Compaq Presario 5120 computer and has worked fine for several years. No it just seems "dead".
When I run compaq diagnostics the modem passes tests and seems to be fine, but when I try to make my internet connection I get a message that the modem is not working and perhaps not plugged in. I don't even hear a dial tone. Is it time for a new modem?

thats what it sounds like! you may want to try to uninstall and reinstall it first. but more than likely its gone.

Thanks, that's what I thought. Decided to trash it and go with a cable modem.
