I'm trying to get my head round the way that the roaming profile works.

I understand that for an account you can specify the location for a local copy of the profile and the location for the server copy of the profile.

1) Is the following true?

Each time a user signs on, the server copy overwrites the local copy and the local copy is used.
Any changes to the local profile during the session are stored on the local copy and then uploaded to the shared location when the user signs off.

2) If the roaming profile is used on a network share for a laptop user, will the laptop just use the local profile when it boots up without a connection to the network ( i.e. just as a stand alone machine )?

3) Am I correct the 'home folder' defined on the 'profile' tab of a user account defines the location of 'My Documents'? If so I assume a local copy is also stored on a laptop for sessions disconnected from the network?

Thanks

1) True

2) Yes it just uses the local profile.

3) That depends on your setup but the My Documents folder will reside in the users Documents and Settings folder by default this can be redirected to a share using folder redirection. The setting in the users properties will just map a drive at logon but will not redirect the My Documents folder.

Ok.

Thanks for the help.

I still just to make sure I am crystal clear on the last point.

'My Documents' still sits on the C drive but the user will save to the 'home folder' location when defined as a network share location.

What happens if the user is using a laptop and is not connected to the network? Is there a local cache copy of the 'home folder' in the C drive My Documents that will be uploaded to the network share if any changes are made to it?

No the users home folder that is mapped in the profile will not be available when they are not connected to the network. If you want that then you will have to use the offline files feature.

You can use the My Documents folder in the profile and this will be copied across at logon and logoff but if the folder holds allot of work then logons can become a long drawn out affair.

Ok. Thanks for your help.
