Roaming Outlook settings w/o Exchange

We are currently using IMAP email accounts (hosted by an ISP). We are running Windows 2000 Server with Active Directory and using roaming profiles.

We would like the Outlook email settings (IMAP account settings) for each user to be roaming as well. How can we accomplish this without Exchange Server?

I have tried moving a user's Outlook.pst file to their Profile directory on the server and pointing Outlook to that file located on the server but it didn't work.

Any ideas? Step-by-step instructions would be great.

You don't want use PST files at all. I am wondering the same thing. We still have people using Windows 98 but with Outlook XP. I want any user to be able to access his/her own e-mail from anywhere.

I have never done roaming profiles without exchange and frankly I don't think there is a way to accomplish what you want without exchange.

using either of these utilities, you can generate a custom outlook profile from the logon script.

I have read that this modprof doesn't work with Office XP. What are the other options?

There is no perfect solution to this problem, and in fact this is one of the reasons why I moved to exchange. In my experience, though, if you move the PST file into the %userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook folder instead of the %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook folder, once logged in for each user, then you open outlook, tell it where you have moved the PST file and reopen it, it should work. Make sure you log off and delete all copies of the profile on all the other machines, except the server. Note also that this method can make the profiles extremely large, which will make logons very slow.
