Please help. =(

I just started my own business, and purchased a nortel M3904 following AT&T guy's suggestion. I just figured out, while talking to AT&T installation dept., that I needed to purchase system as well. The tech guy asked me what the jack type is (for the dial tone), and I just have no idea what that means, nor could I find in web search.

Also, the M3904 resource says I can purchase network option 11c, 51c, 61c, 81c, or PBX phone system. What should I buy? Do I have to go through this? Why is it so complicated unlike land-line at home?

Please guide me. I'd very much appreciate it if you could explain and suggest the best option for me.

The option 11C will start at about $20,000 and thats probally more than you need.

Buddy I think ATT got you on that one. Yes you would need a system like you have described to make the phone work. And you would need some DEEP pockets too. The question is how many employes will you have etc.Their are a many of small systems made by nortel example an 8x24.I would get your money back from being mis-led.

I am the original poster. I am a sole proprietor and am planning to hire 1-3 within the next 1-2 years. Yes, I really do not need M3904 - wasted time learning terminology and system options...

I will purchase a simpler phone, prolly Nortel 8000 or 9000 series. Thank you for those who shared your knowledge!

Go to Home Depot an Buy a Panasonic 4 line phone and you can start with 1 phone line and add up to 4 total as you need them. when you need more phones just buy more. then all can call each other, there about $100.

If you eventually plan to grow larger than 4 phones, I would look for the Norstar 8x24 on the secondary market. You can use regular CO lines (like at home) on that system and it can be purchased for about the same amount as 4 or 5 4 line phones. Just have to keep your eyes peeled! A good source to find these type systems is at your local or state government surplus sales. I know that here in Washington state, these are very common systems that reached end of life, so the government has replaced them, even though these systems will work forever. They are very robust. The set types that I would recommend using with the 8x24 are the M7310. You could also use the M7209 or for a receptionist, a M7324. I put these in all over as side jobs, and have yet to go replace a dead system. They just keep oh chugging along....

Thanks for your input. I have a follow-up question. The AT&T guy recommended Aastra PT-480e, which seems to have many useful functions. But I can't find any info if it would be compatible with AT&T's POTS line. Any idea? Or can I assume that that model would work since it's an analog phone? Thanks all for your advice.

If it's a analog phone, it will work. I have an Astra in my garage, not sure if it's the same model off the top of my head, but it has plenty of features and has worked for many years.

I may not need to have all lines connected to my phone, but I certainly want to be able to have intercom function (i.e.,talk to secretary over the phone without actually calling her number). Can I still do that with a single-line phone?

This is only a single line phone! The one I have is multi line, but whatever fits your needs.

One more note: I don't even know why my AT&T guy recommended a single-line phone... I may not need to have all lines connected to my phone, but I certainly want to be able to have intercom function (i.e.,talk to secretary over the phone without actually calling her number). Can I still do that with a single-line phone or should I purchase a multi-line?

Also, the reason I asked if Aastra PT-480e is compatible with POTS line is because, unlike other models Aastra (for example, Meridian 9216A), the model details do not say that it would be compatible with standard telephone services. Does anyone have clear idea?

Yes it is compatible with POTS lines.
Yes it will work.
No, you will not be able to intercom your secretary with this phone.

What's up w all the 8x24's guys we should at least get him into the 21st century w a CICS dont you think...Those Aastra phones look like Nortel rip offs are they owned by Nortel? If not they should sue that company they are way to similar. yri98 a analog phone will work with any analog line wether AT&T, Verizon etc. but with those analog phones you will not have exts,intercoms to talk to other in house people that's why I would recommend the Nortel CICS that system comes as a 4x16 four lines/16 digital stations/phones and it can be expanded to a 8x24 and you can also add voicemail to it when your ready for that.
