I normally demonstrate Windows 2000 Remote Installations in my class that I teach and have not had a problem before now. The clients don't find the RIS server and the only thing that changed since the last time I did this is that a Catalyst 2950 switch is now being used to connect our workstations instead of an old hub we were using. I'm not a Cisco person so I don't know where to start looking. Is there any reason why this switch could be causing this problem. Thanks for any suggestions you can provide

1st guess is that broadcasts aren't making it to the server. We can tell you why but you're going to have to post the 2950's config.

Where did the switch come from? If it's new from the box, then there may be a hardware problem because they usually work fine out of the box. I'm guessing that someone did some configuration changes to it previous to it being in your classroom that has the ports on different VLANs, or even disabled or hard strapped ports.

If you can telnet into the switch (using it's IP address) or get into the console port, type in Enable on the command line and then type "show run". Cut and paste the output and then print it here to the forum or email it to me and we can see what's going on. MAKE SURE YOU TAKE OUT YOUR IP ADDRESS before you post it.

You need to use an "ip helper-address xx.xx.xx.xx" that points to the ip address of the RIS server. You need to have this set up on every segment that you will be RIS'ing from.
