Hello everyone,

I need to create a ripped PDF. I can't find anything on the internet about this. I've created Press ready PDFs, but am unsure about ripped PDFs. Please give me some info on this subject if you can.

Thanks in advance,

coc

A RIP - Raster Image Processor - is software for controlling high quality, postscript printers - mostly commercial, but some expensive lasers and proofing inkjets.

For high quality printing, you create a Press quality pdf. The printer will run that through their rip. You do not "rip" a pdf on creation.

Thanks for responding so quickly. I agree with your response. My problem is that I have a customer who is requesting a ripped PDF along with their proofs. I have received "ripped" PDFs from customers before, but am unaware of the process for creating them.

I am the printer in this case and I understand ripping for printing. The only thing I can think of is that the ripped PDF is a RIPPED postscript file that has been coverted into a PDF.

If you have anymore insite, please respond.

Thanks again.

Can't think of anything. You might want to ask them what they mean by ripped pdf - if they mean a ripped ps converted to pdf. I've been playing at the graphics game since the mid 1970s and have never heard of that.

...a ripped pdf is achievable but only if your rip has the ability to create pdf files, depending on your rip software you might not be able to achieve this.

I know that the Agfa Apogee X rip is capable of exporting to pdf both individual pages and also imposed schemes, but in my experience the pdf's it creates are often quite large, larger than what distiller churns out. This is something I have addressed with our studio manager, but he seems as dumbfounded as me on this one.

Options for changing pdf export settings seem limited on this rip, although does a great job with flattening transparency...

...if you have the option to get a postcript file off the rip then you could always use that and then distill it, of course this is a bit of a cheats way out as this isn't strictly speaking the final processed file...

...you might want to consider conatcting your rip provider for support on this issue, they will soon tell you if final processed pdf files are accessible from the rip...

...the ripped pdf files you have received from outside sources are probably from rips capable of this feature or are pdf files used at imposition stage...

Thanks apepp. I had a feeling that this may be the case. I'm pretty sure my rip does not have the PDF option, but I will definitely contact my provider.
