right mouse function in excel

When I am in a spreadsheet in excel and I use the RMB to choose one of the following:
cut
copy
paste
paste special
clear contents
format cells

they are grayed out and cannot use. Why is this happening?

yes, I am in a cell and want to copy something and when I do the right mouse it is gray. I have to do a ctrl C and ctrl V to paste.
