Hello,
For most of my printing [on a phser 850] this has not been an issue. But more recently when i started printing full page pictures i noticed that on the right side of the sheet, the ink is falling off the paper. First there are little strips of ink and then they rub off. Please see the image at
I noticed that inside the printer, the roller that is next to the drum is missing black rubber in the precise location where this problem is happening. (see (please note that i broke the black contraption that normally hides this roller but everything seems to work fine without it)
Is this why I am having problems? If so, is this part replacable on its own or does the entire drum have to be replaced? The reason I ask is because i have a broken 840 that i would be more than happy to get the part from.
Thanks for all your help!

Chances are great that you have a broken maintanence drawer guide. Blue plastic long part on the insides.
However, if you are refering to a part on the maintenence drawer itself, replace it.
If this is the transfix roller that is messed up, it is a bigger job!
Also, one lamp may be blown in the preheater.
Ah yes,,, looked at the picture, it is transfix roller.
You can use the one off the 840.

Is this transfix roller somewhat easy to replace because it seems to be a part of the drum assembly. I have looked at the part diagrams online and it is not listed as a seperate part. I do not want to totally ruin my printer, so please give me an honest assessment if you think i can get to the roller and replace it.
Thanks

I started taking apart my phaser 840 and this thing will not come out. There is a rod going through it and I cannot remove the entire drum assembly because there is a special screw on both sides keeping it in. Is there a work around for my roller? (i.e.some form of tape or other method that will make my prints come out ok)

Well no, It is a separate assy. and it is a lot of tear down to replace it. You are not removing the drum, just the transfix assy. It sits in front at the top of the drum.
Taping the roller will only lead to more problems!
the part diags. are one thing, but you need the removal pages of the manual. If you are a tech, and have access to Xerox, you can download it. If not, you might want to seek better help. It's a little hard to post all the stuff you need to know.
