I have a general SQL question. At the moment Ihave a number of jpeg images on a web server, I using Ultra Media gallery 5 (purchased)to display images. There is 3 year of images and 12 catergories about 1500 images. there will be another 600 added at the end of the year.

My question am I better of using a SQL database and sone software to retreive images. I have a problem with storage space no more available so looking a low cost way as the library is only going to get larger. A rating system would be nice as the current one is not clear to users..

Any ideas appreciated.

Databases merely make it easy to store the relevant information, they do not compress data, and they do not offer rating systems.

You'll want to change to a database because it makes it easier to manage the image library and because you can code the engine to show the images by using data from the databases, however the physical space for the images is still required, even if you store them in the BB which is not recommended.

Usually what is done is to store the paths to the images and work off of those. Images would remain in the file system.

Your front end, whatever it may be, would then connect to the database to find any images needed and generate the gallery.

Thanks, Need to think of a better way to manage images.

Sorry not an option. We do not have any motre server space availabe to us to use. To upgrade will cost 1000's per year. So my only option is some sort of compression.

okay well then you have a question about image compression and not databases. most common practice is to save images in your file directory and path to images in database.

even if you store the images in database you have no compression options.
