I got this problem. When I right click to open a browser, it doesn't not load. When I roll my mouse over that browser, the cursor is in 'busy' sign, for long long period of time. I tried many ways but all attempt failed. I tried but also doesn't work. And the end, I re-install the Win 98 and also the can't fix it. Is it my NIC problem? I hope someone can help. Thanks.

I have posted a similiar problem not long ago (thread616-730720 But, that's another pc and it was fixed. But not this pc.

Have you checked this machine for viruses?
What is the CPU useage in task manager?

Check already with norton antivirus 2004 but no virus. by the way, i'm using win 98, so can't see the task manager.

You should still be able to check the CPU useage in Win98.
I can't remember the program, but I think it resides in Start/program files/applications/system tools.
Can you connect to the network & browse the other machines that are connected?

Yeah, i can see other pc in network neighborhood. i can access to the internet also but only problem is when i right click to open a new browser, it has a busy cursor and for very very long period of time.

Doesn't sound like your NIC has a problem then.
When you re-installed Win98 was this over the top of the original or from a formatted hard drive?
If it was over the top, then it could still be a software problem.
If it was a fresh install then it may be hard ware related.
Have you got the latest drivers for all of your hard ware?

I re-intalled over the top and another things is if I cut and copy an url to the new opened browser, it works but not right click to open it or another technical html is when target="_blank"

are you asking that if you "right click" on a url shortcut and choose "Open in New Window" or "Open"....that it hangs then?
Go in Windows Explorer>View>Folder Options -or- Tools>Folder Options
File Types tab
Scroll to "HTML Document"
click "Edit"
click "Open" in the 'Actions' box
click "Edit"
Write down the Settings....or make a note of them (I copy and paste, one by one)

What you want to do is put these "same" settings under
File Types;
"URL:HyperText Tranfer Protocol"
click "Edit"
click "Open" in the 'Actions' box
click "Edit"

If it still isn't working try
File Types;
"Internet Shortcut"
click "Edit"
click "Open" in the 'Actions' box
click "Edit"
in "application used to perform action" for this one, put in;
rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l

Post back, and i'm going now to view other thread you posted..sounds familiar

are we atleast diagnosing the correct problem?

a small clarification:
im the command line above for internet shortcut;
rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l -(this is %L)...

html doc settings look correct
were the same already there, under URL HTTP file type?

Are you having same prob with right click Open *and* Open in New Window.?
Are they both present under each File Type?

Whatcha got under Internet Shortcut?

Oh yeh
It's all good you registered the .DLL's with RegSrv32

Have you an IE CD to "replace" possible corrupted or incorrect versions with/from?
or atleast all the .cab setup files for IE?

What version are you using?

I had lost all functionality once of mhtml format(web archive)
It turns out I had the incorrect version of Msvcrt.dll

You asked:

My answer:
it gots hang when I right click, "open in new window" and not "open"

You told me to set Internet Shortcut like html document. So, they are both the same.

Yeah, the rest are same with html document setting.

I just re-installed the IE.

The IE version is 6.0.2800.1106
Cipher Strength: 128-bit
Product ID: -=NCA Patched=-
Updated Versions:; SP1;

Read my posts again concerning "Internet Shortcut" file type
I think you missed a little bit....
HTML and URL HTTP are the same
Internet shortcut is diff.

Did the IE reinstall help?

Oh, ya. Ok. I got that as well. No, IE reintall doesn't help.

One quick workaround for now that may work is
Go in Windows Explorer>View>Folder Options -or- Tools>Folder Options
General Tab..set it to "Classic Style"

need some shuteye now...
see ya tomorrow

Changed to classic style but still doesn't work.

In Internet Properties of IE6>Advanced tab..."browsing" area...there's a "reuse windows for launching shortcuts".
UNcheck it

I would suggest that if you only re-installed windows over the top of the original, you want to consider formatting the hard drive & re-installing windows a fresh. It sounds like you have got some sort of corruption in some files & just installing things back over the top doesn't always work.

I kinda agree w/kestrel1

If you want to get adventurous right before you wipe and do a Clean install Use Start>Run SFC to extract some Original System files from 98 CD....

To extract a specific system file
In System File Checker, click
Extract one file from installation disk.
Enter the name of the file, and then click
Start. In
Restore from, type the location of your Windows 98 installation media. In
Save file in, type the location where you want to put the file, and then click
OK

Do it to all the ones you've registered from those previous M$ articles..
IMO...Don't use the Default.sfc to replace them....who knows what's in there now..use the Win98 CD
These are major IE files along with
Explorer.exe
Shdocvw.dll Mshtml.dll Comctl32.dll Shlwapi.dll Shell32.dll
