OK, big problem here, I've tried everything and searched every possible forum but still no dice.
A few days ago I noticed that suddenly everytime i right click on a folder explorer hangs (I have to shut it down and restart it in task manager). Same behaviour if i just highlite a folder (left click) and then press delete on the keyboard. Now the strange thing is that i can right click files and delete them no problem. I've googled around and tried other people's solutions for this but still nothing.
More info:
1) I can't system restore to a few weeks ago (i've tried 3 different restore points). I says system restore unable to complete after reboot and nothing changes.
2) I don't have Iomega burn or Eraser like other people that have had these symptoms
3) I've ran chkdsk with no probs, same with defrag and even system repair with the XP CD.
4) I've run RegSupreme and done a deep scrub of the registry still to no avail
5) I read somewhere that people were having similar probs because of Norton AV and probs with verisign certificates on Jan 8. I have NAV Pro 2003 and everything's up to date.
6) I've even updated to my latest Nvidia drivers (as some suggested) and still nothing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as my system runs like a dream except for this recent bug (could it be some arcane registry key that's messing things up?). I'm out of ideas

An update,
I've done everything possible I can think of. There are no errors in event viewer, I have the same problem when I boot in safe mode, I've checked my RAM and it's ok, I chkdsk, sfc and defragged again. I have loads of unsigned XP drivers but who doesn't? I let hijack remove the "O16 - DPF: {66666666-6666-6666-6600-000000000000} -" entry, I cleaned my registry with reg cleaning progs, have scanned the PC for virus and spyware and yet the problem remains. I also noticed that explorer also hangs when I right click the start menu. I can delete files inside folders no problem but folders itself still hang when i right click them or left click and press the delete key on the keyboard.
Strangely enough i tried to restore again to an earlier time and I got the old error message saying it was unable to restore. I think that this is most probably a registry problem of some sort or an undocumented bug in XP Pro SP1. Anyone know of a really good registry cleaning or repair tool that could help?
Neroman: I will post here any solution that I find since this is so frustrating and I don't want others to have to go through this.

Hi quemquiseres:

Today, my computer has exactlly (100% the same, hang on right click, delete key hang, files ok, no virus, all checked, XP Pro sp1, etc), and most important I DID defrag yesterday! I have removed all unnecessary processes manually and the problem still remain. The context-menu appear for folder after around 5 mins. If you found the solution, please let me know.

I have just checked, the problem also happen in open file dialog (ie notepad, file open...) if I right click a folder even explorer is not running!!! So, it seems not directly related to explorer.exe

Sorry, me again, I have checked with other application

- IE | Favorites | Organize Favorites right click a folder, same, doesn't work.
- All folders inside My Computer, same, doesn't work.
- Links to any folder, same, doesn't work.

* Right click on My Computer, works!
* Right click on My Network Places, works!
* Right click on My Documents (on desktop), works!
* Outlook Express, Email folder tree, works!
* Deleted folders in Recycle Bin, works!

I hope anyone can find out what the hell is going on. Thanks!

shirleylam,

Are you sure you did steps #1 - #3 in FAQ faq608-4650

These may all be legitimate entries, but the seen odd to me:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IMJPMIG8.1] E:\WINDOWS\IME\imjp8_1\IMJPMIG.EXE /Spoil /RemAdvDef /Migration32
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] E:\WINDOWS\System32\hkcmd.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMan] SOUNDMAN.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AGRSMMSG] AGRSMMSG.exe

Do two online antivirus scans (Trend Micro and Panda are good choices) from smah's FAQ: faq760-3862

Then do steps #2 and #3 from FAQ faq608-4650

Hoooray,
Finally success after all this time poking around. Thank you so much linney for that valuable link in the google groups. I followed that and read the post in the microsoft forums (i had actually posted my question there last week but no one answered) and decided to start my PGP service (I had put it on manual). As soon as I did that my problems went away and now my baby is running like a dream. Thanks again to you and also to bcastner for your advice and for taking time off to help others. For awhile there I thought I'd discovered some weird bug in XP. Now I have my PGP service on automatic.
I hope this also helps shirleylam and neroman (check your services , specifically PGP, maybe others?, and start them if they're stopped one by one and see if the problem goes away - no need to reboot).
Thanks again to all and good luck.

Thanks for everyone! Dear quemquiseres, I have the same problem that you have, after I uninstalled PGP 8.0.2 and re-installed it again, the problem gone and running smoothly now!!!

Thanks.

I can't even start expressing my gratitude, quemquiseres. You're the man! Thanks!

I'm glad this worked out for everyone after all the frustration we've been through. I don't want to fill up this thread with thanks to everyone, but I believe that this shows just how useful these forums can be if people work together and help each other solve problems that the official tech support forums can't resolve.
Thanks again to linney and bcastner for their dedication in helping others.
Glad things worked out for shirleylam and neroman.

Wow - thank a million for this answer - right-clicking my start button made XP hang for a few minutes - it's been driving me crazy for a couple of days. As I read through this thread I found the solution - the PGP service.

I sudddenly remembered disabling the PGPsdkService a couple of days ago while cleaning out my system. Duh! Turned it back on and right-clicking the start button works fine again.

Thanks guys!

I have been troubled by this right click problem open drives [optical and hard]for a couple of weeks - it occurs using explorer but not if done from the management console.

I have done all those things recommended above but looking at this thread to day I see that it can be cured by enabling "PGP" services. I do not see such a service in my list.
Could you please expand the answer?

Sorry to be a late comer, but better late than never

linney

thanks for your quick answer. I had seen that solution but unfortunatley it does not work for me.

Follow all the steps discussed earlier in the thread, and in thread779-775682

And other threads. In my particular case it was GoBack, others PGP, others a lot of unresolved external Intranet Links.

There is no magic bullet for this issue.

bcastner

Thanks, I see from google searches that this is quite a common problem since SP1 was released and back in 2003 Micorsoft were reported saying it was a bug which would be fixed in SP2, which has not included such a fix so far.

What is really strange that it only occurs in my case if explorer is started by double clicking my Computer. Started in other ways e.g. MMC snapin right clicking is Ok. From the performance log I can see that what is happening in my case is that CPU 1 is going 100% which is presumably why it cannot close explorer.

This thread is taking on a life of its own and it is a full time job to check what has been mentioned or not. You can try these if you haven't already.
