If any of you could help me in this situation I would remain most grateful. The problems that I am experiencing with Windows XP are,

* When I right-click on my desktop (not on an icon) the computer freezes
* When I have two Explorer windows open and I try and cut-and-paste (or drag) files or folders the Explorer windows freeze
* When I try to create a New Folder in an Explorer window the computer freezes

I hope that there is hope for me!

Many thanks

Nik

In addition to my post I should mention that "right-click" works fine in other areas of my computer, just not on the desktop.

Try it in Safe Mode.

Try it in Normal Mode but use a different user.

ShellExView is a good tool for sorting out this type of problem.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Dear friend,

Thanks for this reply and sorry for the delay in response. I tried several attempts at scaning and repairing disks etc, and in the end a friend came round and we spent the evening trying to solve the problem - which in the end was a Microsoft update called <verclsid.exe>. We removed this update and all is now fine.

Thanks again for your assistance,

Nik
