i was working at a clients site, and i really need Symantecs help to solve a problem, but the client doesnt have any record of the serial number (product is Symantec AV corporate edition (multi-tiered)) - its got Gold support also.

i am taking this responsibility over from another IT company who didnt' record any serial numbers or record any support details (the vermin)

when i spoke to Symantec they said they cant help me without the serial number - which we must have had they tell me in order to get the product working.

sooooo.....my question is this, is their a way to extract the serial from the computer\server somehow, is it stored in the registry or something like that? they say it begins with a B.

anyone have any ideas>?

i think if you look at the grc.dat file using notepad tou will see the serial number. it should be located on the vphome share of any antivirus server.

Easy way to get it, is to open NAV, open help, open about, you should see version, licence number and licence type.

Thanks all.

Stiddy, Will the info in the grc.dat file differ from what you see in help, about, because the help - about info is not what i need unfortunately.

I already have the license type etc, what i need the actual installation serial number that apparently begins with a B - this is such a pain, cos the client has Gold support on this product, but the IT cowboys, have no support records.

I was wondering if its lurking in the the Registry somewhere.

Yes, in the grc.dat my license number starts with an 'S' but if I view help on any client the letter 'S' is not displayed but the numbers are identical. So, I be lieve if you look into the grc.dat file on about the fourth line you should see

LicenseNumber=SXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX

or in your case hopefully bXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX

HTH- Mike

Stiddy i will give it a shot, thanks very very much for your help.

I will get the client to have a look, or maybe just pay them a visit very soon.

Thanks alot.

Having looked up a few grc.dat's on the web it doesnt look good, the file contains the license number NOT the serial number - its the serial number that i need.

Then i can give that to Norton for tech support.
