Hello,

I am having so much troubles using Commvault Galaxy express 7 on Windows server 2008.

I need your advice to create a policy to make 8 full backup per month (Tuesday and Friday of each week)and reuse the same tapes each month.

do I have to make it to retain data for 25 days 1 cycle or 25 days 8 cycles?

for DR, i left it as per default, 60 days 60 cycles.

Can i put the DR backup on the same tape? normally i have a different tape for DR, what do you recommend?

thank you

I also want to add that even after uninstalling Commvault Galaxy express, and reinstalling it, I still get the same error, although it was working fine 2weeks ago.

the error is:
Error Code: [25:47] Description: [Media in the drive is already assigned. Replace this media.] Please insert a new media into the library [StndAln Library 1] drive [IBM ULTRIUM-HH3_1] for JobID [2]

the media was formated and stamped today, no other media is assigned in the library as this was a fresh installation, the media is LTO3 400/800 GB, the process stopped at 72% (514GB) so it is not full (800 compressed)

Please advise.
Thank you

Apparently, I was using an old SP0 which has some bugs, I was told by support to update to service pack 5, and although the software was set to download and install the updates but it didn't.

I downloaded and installed it and running a backup now and will let you know if it is still an issue.
I was also told that cycles should be the number of full backups until reusing the same tape again. in my case it should be 27 days 7 cycles cos after the 8th backup process i will need to reuse the first tape again.

Thank you

CommVault won't start counting days until all the cycle counts are complete and a cycle is the period from 1 sucessful full backup to the next.

So if you do 2 full backups a week and have an 8 cycle / 25 day retention policy than you are looking at roughly 4 weeks + 25 days of retained data.

Search CommVault's website for their data retention spreadsheet which you can enter your days and cycles into and it will tell you how long your data will be kept.

Regarding how much data you will get on your LTO3 tapes. That all depends on what type of data is being written to it. You will likely get well over 800GB if you are backing up files that are easily compressed, such as documents and spreadsheets. You will likely get only slightly above 400GB if you are backing up files that are already highly compressed such as jpg images or databases that do not compress well.

And yes, use separate tapes for your DR backup from your regular backups.
