I was wondering whether its possible to restrict audio access to certain applications. e.g. When playing a song, disable other applications' audio output.

Windows Applications.

Have a look at Sounds and Audio Devices in the Control Panel. On the Properties Page under the Sounds Tab, highlight any Sound Event you wish to prevent (there are quite a few). From the drop down menu under Sounds, select None for each program sound event you wish to silence.

Other Applications.

See if there is any option to remove sound included in their properties. Most of their sounds are probably Windows sound events.

I understand that, but that only stops certain 'Audio Events' only if the sounds were associated with particular application. Let me clarify my situation more.

I am playing music.
I don't want to listen to any audio output coming from e.g. 'Macromedia Shockwave or Flash'. Is there a way to stop a particular application? or stop the sound from going to audio device from a particular application.

More options are available for turning Sounds off in IE under Tools/ Internet Options/ Advanced/ Browsing/ Multi Media.

Right clicking on any Flash player screen should offer you some options too.

What application is playing your music and what is the normal source of this music. Is it CD or a file? How and when are the sounds overlapping.

My apologies for not still fully understanding your question.

Well I am the one unable to clarify the situation. I tried the Internet Explorer option you mentioned. It works with 'inline embedded' sounds like midi or .wav or auto triggered audio from a web page, it doesn't effect IE plugins. It won't disable Flash or Shockwave sound.
I am playing Mp3, that generates WAVE music. Flash and Shockwave use WAVE music output to generate sound as well.

Flash and Shockwave are independent applications running as plugins inside Explorer.

I wanted to have the ability to disable audio output access for a particular application.

"Flash and Shockwave are independent applications running as plugins inside Explorer". Is that Explorer or Internet Explorer?

Isn't there an option in IE to turn off third party extensions (plugins?) that specify that you want to disable features you installed for use with Internet Explorer that may have been created by companies other than Microsoft.

Normally it is used in IE if you encounter problems with Internet Explorer that you cannot resolve, you can use this option to help determine if third-party features are causing the problems without uninstalling the feature. You must restart Internet Explorer after turning this option on or off.

Do Flash and Shockwave play .SWF extension files? Can you change the association of them away from Flash Player etc.

I take it removing these players is not an option for you.

I really appreciate your help.

Plugins inside Internet Explorer, particularly Flash and Shockwave. If I disable third party extensions, Flash and Shockwave won't play at all, these run .SWF files.

You got it right that I don't want to remove them.

Thanks for the help though.
