I am using a netgear router, wired to a homeplug. The homeplug in another room is then wired to a netgear switch, which connects to 2 PC's.

I am experiencing a weird problem.
I am downloading bit torrent files, yet when I open Internet Explorer or Outlook , it syas there is no internet connection.

Is this something to do with ports ?
I'm a bit low on networking knowledge, so if anyone can help I will appreciate it

Internet uses port 80. I believe email uses ports 25 and 110. Your bit torrent can use any port, typically in a real high range (like 15000.) My guess is that either your downloading is using up so much bandwidth that the email and Internet are timing out and failing or you have a firewall somewhere that's blocking traffic on these ports. Many bit torrent programs are set by default to give unlimited bandwidth to itself, so I would suspect you're just timing out on your other programs. Depending on what programs you use, you can adjust the amount of bandwidth to use for torrents and also the timeout period in your other apps. Hope this helps.
 
Does Internet/email work when the bittorrent application is turned off, or paused?

I have the bit torrent software using port 50000.
I use Kaspersky firewall and have opening port 50000, the NAT test on the bit torrent program works fine.
I will look into the bandwidth situation, as that is something I have not considered.
Currently, I can download and use the internet but after a certain period of time I lose internet for email browsing etc, but the torrents still work.

I have tried pausing / stopping the torrent downloads but the only way I get internet back (full access from any application) is to power off my asdl router and power it back on again.

Maybe your ISP is giving you a kicking for using torrents and exceeding a "fair" use policy.

The fact that the router has to be restarted is critical; it's the piece of hardware/firmware that enables your Internet connection. I would first try taking that powerline router & switch out of the loop, temporarily connect the PC directly to the Internet modem, either by physically moving the PC or using a long cable.

If this were the case the torrents would stop as well, as they are the more bandwidth-hungry process. I think the homeplug/router/switch system might have a glitch or two.

When the Internet goes down, have you tried pinging the router?

OK, the way I have my network set up has changed slightly, its only since the change I have encountered the problem.

When I had the router to the homeplug and direct to my PC there were n oproblems.
Its only since I added the switch into the equation.

So it is now router, homeplug, into the switch (Netgear as well) then my pc and a laptop are attached to the switch.

When the net goes (not torrents, I can't get ot the router via 192.168.0.1, I have not tried pinging it, I guess it's the same thing (no response).

The IP's I get are 192.168.0.2 (laptop) and 192.168.0.3 (PC).
Always get the same assigned so thats ok.

Just very weird why after a certain period of time the net access crashes. I will try limiting the bandwidth and see how that goes.

There may be a QoS (Quality of Service) setting in the router, and there may also be a DHCP conflict with the switch (are you sure it's a switch and not a hub?). Is the switch's DHCP disabled? You only want one device (usually the router) with DHCP enabled, it will then dole out IP adresses across the network.

For trial's sake, you need to remove some variables, like the home plug (or the switch) from the equation, test every possible configuration.

Alternately, you could call Netgear's top-tier (NOT!) phone support...[smile]

Of course I am not really suggesting that.
