I have a customer who is trying to recover some emails from a tape backup. The original machine (which he does not have access to or much knowledge of) is not available. He thinks it was running something like windows 2000 server and he doesn't know what version of exchange server. The backup software is symantec exec. I'm not an expert in exec or exchange server - he could do with one to help this recovery (and he's willing to pay - we're in the UK). I got the backup software to catalogue the items on the tape & managed to start a restore with redirected destination - it reads the tape ok but fails when trying the restore. The machine its running on is running XP and no version of exchange. Would appreciate if anybody could advise or put me in touch with someone else - the emails he's trying to recover are important to him. Thanks

Some personal emails from his inbox which are very important to him (in my attempt, I selected just his inbox to restore.) As I said I'm not a symantec exec or exchange expert - it looked to me that you would need to restore to a machine with exchange installed to be able to access said emails (or even for the restore to work), and I was hoping to put him in touch with somebody who could do that for him (as I can't).

Yep - you're either going to restore to the Exchange server, or restore the .edb file and use a third party tool to export emails to a .pst file. Either way it's fairly involved.
