Restoring SQL 2000 DB backup to SQL 7.0 DB

I tried doing this and got the message "backup on-disk structure version 539; SQL Server 7 supports version 515".
Obviously, the backup formats are different. Does anyone know of a solution, workaround, or procedure for doing this?

Not supported
You may perhaps be able to get a server to server DTS working and think about transferring the objects but the backup structures are not backwards compatible

Do I need to detach the database before trying to dts it back to my sql 7 server

No, you don't detach. If you detach the database it would no longer be available for the DTS transfer. DTS works with the SQL Engine to perform the task. It handles the objects in the database one at a time. You cannot simply move or copy the MDF file directly. A SQL 2000 MDF file is not compatible with SQL 7. Terry L. Broadbent - DBA
