Restoring messages from Windows Bkup 1

Can you search for and restore individual messages from Win Bkup on Exchange 5.5? We have a user who is trying to track down an item he can't find and believes was in his deleted items folder which was cleared yesterday.

Afraid not. You need either Arcserve or Veritas Backup Exec to backup/restore inidividual mailboxes

As said, you can't do it. You can however restore the whole mail server to another box (it'll need the same org, site and server name and will therefore need to be off line), search the mailbox and export the emails.

Your other option is to tell him/her it can't be done...

There's one thing you can do though to avoid such problems in a future. In your private information store properties set the deleted item retention time for ..let's say 30 days. Once the user delets the message it can still be retrieved within next 30 days from individuals mailbox.
