Hi all

I need some clarification regarding savevg command.

I am currently running AIX 4.3.3 and using savevg to backup my non-rootvg Volume group. However, due to the fact I do not have a test system to try the restoration, can someone pls answer my doubts?

My question:
------------
Can I restore my non-rootvg from my backup image (from a tape) to a totally new machine without the /tmp/vgdata/<non-rootvg>/<non-rootvg>.data in the new system?
My understanding is I don't need to have the /tmp/vgdata/<non-rootvg>/<non-rootvg>.data file in the system as this file is already being backup in the backup image)

Thanks.

Hello joekwchen,
to restore files from savevg backup you don't need to have
/tmp/vgdata/<non-rootvg/<non-rootvg.data.
You need only to make volume group <non-rootvg> before
run restorevgfiles.
regards boria.

Hi Boria
I'm refering to restoring the whole <non-rootvg> in a brand new server. (not files)

I only have my tape make from savevg. Is it possible?

thanks.

hi joekwchen ,
what Boria wrote is almost right:

in the 2nd machine by "Restore Volume Group" :
"smitty vg" / "Remake a Volume Gruopu" , or restvg command,
this one will create a new Volome group with inside
old jfs and all files.

What you need on the target machine is a new disk:
an additional disk other that(those) rootvg disk(s).

bye

Hi joekwchen,
It is possible.
You need only to have tape with savevg image.
Regards Boria.
