If this is a 100/150 or BCM Call Pilot then yes, if you are still in the MB and delete a message, if you don't hang up you can restore the message but once you disconnect it's gone.

If a backup was done while the message was in the mailbox and backing up messages option is selected, the message can be restored to the user vmbox.

I worked at a local government site and we backed up cp daily. Many times I was able to retrieve messages had come in overnight or the previous day.

I scheduled my backups around 6:00a. Seemed to be the optimal time.

Daily backups can turn bad news into good news and make you a hero!!!
