Restoring Appleshare files on arcserve 2000

After doing a full backup of a server with appleshares using arcserve 2000 advanced edition, to an LTO tape drive, I found that I could not restore the files.

Checked support site and nothing. Rang Support in Japan and the answer was the dreaded sorry cannot restore the files, as apple is not supported in 2000.

So I rang the US support site, Paid the $95 and same answer, no longer supported.

So I tried installing the NT agent from version 6 onto another server (w2000) and tried a restore using the agent.

It works, very slow but you do get the data back.

If you want to work with mixed media, apple, w2k, Backup exec still supports this

If you backup using the agent you must restore using the agent, it's not just for apple.

Thanks for the reply, but I do not backup using any agents, except exchange, & SQL, and that is from different servers.

I used to use BAOF but now do not use it

Have you tried backing up and restoring at all with the apple agent then? Perhaps this will provide the funtionality you desire?

According to CA, in Japan & US, AS2000 does not support apple, it will backup but does not restore.

I only tried using a V6 agent as a last resort, it does get there but even on LTO, 2 MB/s , slow as

Install the appletalk protocol on the NT server with ARCserve and just do a normal backup and restore. It should all be translated to NT format and then sotred onto tape so it shouldn't have a problem.

That is what I thought, but alas its not the case, CA advised me that it is no longer supported as Apple have strange characters in directory names.

So have now gone back to Backup Exec on this server with apple shares

We've been using their Retrospect Backup solution to backup our Macs for over 5 years now. Works great, restores great. We have file selectors setup and just backup what we consider to be documents (docs, web graphics and HTML code for custom websites and preference files). No apps, extensions or control panels. Fonts are skipped as well. We also use it to back the documents on the NT workstations in our building.

We even use it to backup our external WINNT webserver through our firewall. It only uses 1 port to get through and our Legato Networker needs anywhere from 10,000 to 30,000 ports and that is unacceptable.

We need complete recovery for that server so we will be creating a DMZ and we will have another Legato Networker server there that can backup that server outside the firewall while being pretected from dat bad ol' internet. The Legato Networker backup and the BAOF for Networker will provide us with complete server recovery.

Using Arcserve 2000 on a Win2000 server, backing up directories from Apple server get these error codes
E3322= Invalid name, W3404= File not found (files are there) and E3404= unable to open file. Is backing up files from Apple server to Win2000 server a problem?
Can anyone help?
