Is it possible to restore a users Groupwise account without having a backup copy of the domain database?

not really

With out a backup of the domian database, you loose the fid. With out the FID, the system has no way of scanning the message database to reassemble the users email that could still be there.

So if you don't have a backup, your making a new mail box the users that got deleted.

Further to this. How would you recover an email that a user deleted 4 weeks ago? [ponder]I've suggested that if I recover the users' message db from 3 weeks ago, then all messages after that would be lost. Please advise and/or confirm steps to take.

Thanks in advance.

How would you recover an email that a user deleted 4 weeks ago?

If an email is addressed to a single person, then when it is deleted, it is gone. If the email was addressed to more than one person, the email will stay in the database until everyone who was sent the email deletes it. So it is possible to get that email back if more than one person was on the TO list, and someone in the list did not delete the message.

The problem how ever should only be with recoverying the users mail account and retaining the FID, not with recovering email, that SHOULD be easy.

Most of the articles you will find on the subject of recovering a deleted user will take you down the road of recovering the user account (so long as you have a backup of the wpdomain.db file), then use your backup of the post office to recover the email from a restore point. IT just needs to give backups better attention to ensure they are getting the things they need backups to be able to perform a recovery when needed. It is possible to get a full backup of a mail system, you just have to configure it right to make it all work.
