Hello….

I hope this is a simple question…When we had set our backup system up,
we had 8 drives, and the vendor who assisted us, had set up 7 drives
for one media server, and 1 drive for the backup master so its another storage unit
with in the same robot.
He told us this is the typical way to set this up, so you have a drive available for restores and such.
However, at night when a lot of backups run the 7 drives are quite busy, and if I need a restore it has to wait, and I have no ideal how to use this other drive for a restore?

Can you run a restore from another storage unit? I think I seen where you have to movdb or something to that effect, but if you do this, do you have to move it back?
any suggestions thanks…..scott

What you are lookin for is FORCE_RESTORE_MEDIA_SERVER

ok, where do you put or use FORCE_RESTORE_MEIDA_SERVER,
in the bp.conf file of the client?

What I was thinking was this
bpmedia -movedb -m mediaid -oldserver - newserver

but it seemed like there may be another way,
and if all you have to do is add the FORCE_RESTORE_MEDIA_SERVER to the conf file
when ever you need to?

Thank you.

place it in the master server bp.conf and restart netbackup.
FORCE_RESTORE_MEDIA_SERVER = $MEDIASERVER $MASTERSERVER

NOTE: Use your actual mediaservername masterservername

Only have to do it once whereas the other way with movedb you would have to do it everytime.

ok i seen it noted for windows, this is a linux
backup server runing 6.52.
I think the movedb works for my ordeal, as
our backup master is assigned 1 tape drive
the other media is assign 7

at night backups run and all 7 are busy,
even though restores are high priority, some jobs are
quite large, i thought about moving some key restores
to the other media server since 1 drive was idle, as this
drive is used by some other critial systems.

so I think i new the answer but a lot of times others have a much better way.

Use the bp.conf entry on your linux master server for ALL of your media servers

FORCE_RESTORE_MEDIA_SERVER = $MEDIASERVER_1 $MASTERSERVER
FORCE_RESTORE_MEDIA_SERVER = $MEDIASERVER_2 $MASTERSERVER
FORCE_RESTORE_MEDIA_SERVER = $MEDIASERVER_3 $MASTERSERVER
FORCE_RESTORE_MEDIA_SERVER = $MEDIASERVER_4 $MASTERSERVER

You can have as many lines as you do media servers. Add the entries once and forget about it. All restores will then be done by the master server automaticall.

For the readers that have a windows master server and thus do not have a bp.conf file to edit there is this helpful technote.
