Fellow NB users, I wanted to check to see what you have done to resolve any restore issues where it is taking long for a request to be processed and eventually load the media tape?

Our environment is Solaris 8, using an IBM 3584 LTO Tape Library, using NB 4.5 FP3 on SUN.

Currently working on a restore issue with an Oracle DBA, trying to restore a db file using RMAN. Is there any tuning that can be done to speed up the process of doing a restore?

Any help is appreciated!

If you are using RMAN to backup you must use RMAN to restore. The tuning will be in the RMAN Restore script.

Hi,

What is the framentaion size you are given, it might be zero(0)If you increase the framentation size to unlimit it will restore very fast..
you can use bpadm command for that
bpadm-storeage management and edit
Max Fragment Size: unlimit or (50mb - 2000mb)
try this , it helps you

The fragmentation size set for my Storage Units is 2048mb.
I've been told that if I am trying to restore from an image with a large number of files, I might want to try converting the catalog image from binary to ASCII format, which will allow faster file list generation and possibly faster restores.

Thanks for your input!

I'll ensure that anti-virus is turned off during the restore.
We do multiplexing of 4 and we do allow multi-streaming for the Oracle backups.....

Using multi-streaming during your backup will cause you tons of grief on your restore. I believe the general rule of thumb is: If you are using multiplexing/streaming during your backup, multiply the amount of time it took to backup by 4. So if your backup took four hours then a restore of the entire backup would be somewhere in the 8 - 16 hour range.

Multiplexing/streaming is only useful for fast backups, but will make you suffer on restore.
