I have a Norstar system with MICS 4.1 . There is a NAM which is currently working. Using the information here: I think our current NAM is a fiber NAM 2G, running software version 4.0.04A .

Somewhat foolishly, we have bought another NAM to as a potential replacement. I have not fully unpacked it yet, but from inspecting the outside it looks like a NAM 2, not a NAM 2G or 3G . The FAQ seems to indicate that this NAM has up to NVM 3.0 (but I have not fully unpacked the thing to check). It is a fiber NAM.

Now I am worried. Say that this new machine is running NVM version 3.0 . Would I be able to restore the voice mailboxes and auto-attendant from my old NAM to this one if necessary? Or is this guaranteed to fail?

On a similar note: Assuming I somehow had compatible NAMs (maybe if the new NAM was a NAM 2G or NAM 3G) is there any way to restore settings from one NAM to another in a way that preserves voicemail messages in addition to the voicemail box settings and recorded names? I was thinking of something like this:

- Back up the SEKUR file from the new NAM
- Clone the old NAM's hard drive
- Put the cloned hard drive into the new NAM
- Power on
- Restore the SEKUR file

I doubt this would work when downgrading the NAM, but is there any situation in which it could work?

Thanks for any insight you can offer.

First, see if the NAM you just bought will boot up with your MICS. It might have been upgraded to R4. If it's R3 it won't boot. You'll have to disconnect your existing NAM to make this test.

The hard drive from a NAM V2G will not work in a NAM II. So if you rewrite the hard drive from the NAM II with the info from the NAM V2G you'll have a boat anchor.

I'd see if you could swap the NAM II for another NAM V2G with a minimum R4.0 if you want to have a backup voicemail.

Thanks for the information. It is good to know that a NAM II can be upgraded to R4.0 . In fact, the unit was advertised as having R4.1, but I got confused because the unit is a NAM II.

Will restoring the floppies from my V2G running R4.0 to a NAM II (running R4.0 or 4.1) work properly? Or would there be headaches doing this as well?

Your advice to swap out this NAM II for a V2G is wise, and that is our first choice (in particular, we want a usable NIC on the NAM, and this looks a lot easier with a V2G or V3G). But it is good to understand our options if we have to stick with the NAM II.

Any NAM can be upgraded to R4.1, it's just the older ones have slower processors. Theoretically a restore should work, but I've had problems going between different NAMs even though they were both at R4.1. Adding a NIC to an older NAM is a PITA. It's nice the later versions had the NIC built-in.

Thanks for the information. It makes the situation much clearer.

You must check the hardrive size before upgrading.
You can find the size under F915.

There are other issues but they are listed with the upgrade kit as to what you must have/need before upgrading.

Probablt best just to buy the hard drive with 4.1 loaded already.

App Mod II will have a big enough hard drive to upgrade to R4.1. The older copper NAMs, maybe not. You need a minimum of 540MB to upgrade a copper NAM. RAM is also an issue with old copper NAMs as you need a minimum of 16MB. Again, the APP Mod II should already have sufficient memory. It never hurts to check before starting, as curly wrote. Also, if you buy a new hard drive be sure to have your sekur file backed up beforehand or you'll lose your upgraded channels.
