Here is a doozy:

I am trying to restore emails from a users mailbox from Exchange 5.5 with BE 9.0 Build 4454. I have tried direct restore, redirected restore to 2 different mailboxes all with the same result. I get JOB SUCCESSFUL with 0 byte count of data even though BE sees the size of the items it is to restore. Any ideas what is going on?

No it doesn't verify. The restore starts then it sits there like it will start for about 15 - 20min then it finishes with "SUCCESSFUL" No bytes restored even though BE recognizes there is over 33MB of emails. Strangest thing I have seen yet.
Any suggestions?

Can you restore it to another users mailbox?
Try to use the "Mailbox redirection" and type the SMTP Name of the user. I had this effect also on a customers place and the problem could be solved with this redirection...

Good luck!

I have tried redirection, direct restore, I have tried restoring other user's mailbox, tried my own, tried and tried almost everything and all have the same result.

Did you also dedirect the mailbox with using the "Users Alias Name" as new name? Exchange 5.5 has problems to "find" the right mailbox... I could solve it with this!

Yes, I have tried that too. I have also tried changing the login credentials to an account that has Enterprise Admin Status. Nothing. I am at wits end trying to figure out what the issue could be.

What Im asking is that is that the job that BACKUP these mailboxes has verify turned on. Sol look at you job history. Are the BACKUP jobs completing and verifying or is verify turned off

There is nothing in Job History that indicates any verification. I looked at the XML file it creates also to get more information. It is communicating with our Exchange server, recognizes the mailbox, and proceeds to attempt a restore. Backup Exec THINKS it's done a restore but it hasn't. That is the confusing part.

Ok so we can make the following assumtion

1) Your Backup Job that backs up this data "mailboxes" has no verify.
At this point there is no proof that the data was written sucessfully to tape. So the restore may not work.

In you job setup for you backup job you need to turn on verify. Run another back and make sure it completed then try a restore. At this point the tape you trying to restore from may not work.

For anyone who has similar problems: Restore issue with Exchange Mailboxes has been resolved.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/VERITAS Software/Backup Exec/Engine/Tape Format/<Use Fast File Restore

Changed the Value data to 1

Option must be turned on otherwise issues will arise like seen above. Hope this benefits others.

Thanks for the help and input!
