DELL GX260 with Windows XP Pro.

Logged on with Admin. account to cut and paste a word document from UserA's MY DOCUMENTS to UserB's MY DOCUMENTS.

Deleted the document in error - went to restore from UserB's Recycle Bin and the document was not there. Looked in UserA's Recycle Bin - not there either.

Searched but could not find the file, tried System Restore but it is deactivated as a default by IS function, tried to restore to "Last Good Configuration" no luck.

Anything else I can try?

A network delete operation does not hit the Recycle Bin of either the remote or the local workstation.

But what about the recycle bin for the server it was on?

If anyone calls and says "I know a little something about computers" just tell them to reformat it.

Nope. A network cut/delete operation is equivalent to holding down the shift key while deleting at the local workstation a local file.

You can try undelete tools on the server, if that is where the user profile was located. There is a good discussion of the issue and possible tools in thread779-744465

Howdy:

If the IT Dept. was worth their salt, they should have a backup of the file somewhere.. Out IT backs up the server every second day and each workstation gets backed up weekly..

If this was being done, then there should be a backup copy that could be used to restore the file..

If this wasn't being done, I suggest a "heart-to-heart" talk with the IT Department !!!

IT have there faults, but they do backup server based information.

Maybe should have explained that the file was deleted off the local C: drive - it was not situated on a server. It just appears to have totally missed the recycle bin.

Still no closer to explaining it.
