Restore Information Store To New Machine???

Hi Guys,

Setup: Winnt 4.0 SP6A Exchange 5.5 SP4
information store crashed! have the following error:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7024
Date: 04/03/2003
Time: 4:08:51 PM
User: N/A
Computer: MKTDATA1
Description:
The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service terminated with service-specific error 4294966746.

I already tried restoring from backup using the following procedures:
1. removed the c:\exchsrvr\mdbdata\*.*
2. then restore from backup to c:\exchsrvr\mdbdata\*.*
3. removed the d:\exchsrvr\mdbdata\*.*
4. then restored from backup to d:\exchsrvr\mdbdata\*.*
5. restarted the services, still error persists
6. restarted the machine, error still persists
7. removed d:\exchsrvr\mdbdata\*.edb files
8. restarted services
9. exchange starts, but the data is the new ones, not the old or backed-up data
10. the users can now send&receive mail, BUT the users want to see/retrieve their old mails/data

Is this possible?

can i restore the information store to a new exchange machine that is not a member of the exchange organization,
access the store from there, then save it per user into psts. then just add the psts to the users mailboxes?

suggestions are most welcome!!!!
