Hi

I have posted bits of this before, but I still have a few problems.
I have the white paper from Microsoft, but it sort of ends with "and that will do it".

I have managed to lose some public folders.
I wana get them back.
I have set up a "Hotspare" machine, not joined to the existing site, but it has the same site name and so on (just as Microsoft say)
I then get my online backup (done with NTBackup) select restore to the new server, and 2 hours latter I have one busted Exchange Server, I can't get the Information Store or the Message Transfer Agents to start. I always get a "Specific error 3355445011" error.
Microsoft states that should work.
I have also run eseutil /dr /ispub (and /ispriv and /ds)
This runs through OK, but still I get the errors.

Any Ideas would be really nice.

Thanks, Simon

Hi Simon,

Good Morning.

Try the following Procedure. It will solve ur problem.

1st Create a latest ERD of your Server.

Restore the private information store using ntbackup.

After the restore completes, DO NOT START THE SERVICES.

Start Registry Editor.

Locate the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\
MSExchangeIS\Restore in Progress

NOTE: The above registry key is one path; it has been wrapped for readability.

Modify the following value in the registry.
Value Name: EDB_RstMap
Data Type: REG_MULTI_SZ
Value: \\SERVER1\e$\exchsrvr\MDBDATA\PRIV.EDB
\\SERVER1\e$\exchsrvr\MDBDATA\PRIV.EDB
\\SERVER1\e$\exchsrvr\MDBDATA\PUB.EDB
\\SERVER1\e$\exchsrvr\MDBDATA\PUB.EDB

Remove the two lines that have references to the PUB.EDB. This should leave two lines in the value field as below.
Value Name: EDB_RstMap
Data Type: REG_MULTI_SZ
Value: \\SERVER1\e$\exchsrvr\MDBDATA\PRIV.EDB
\\SERVER1\e$\exchsrvr\MDBDATA\PRIV.EDB

NOTE: The values in the value field above will differ in your environment and should not be changed.

Click OK.

Modify the following value in the registry.
Value Name: EDB_RstMap Size
Data Type: DWORD
Value: 00000002

Change the value to 00000001

Exit the registry editor.

Start the Exchange Server information store.

Doing the above procedure will solve your problem.

Regards,

Nilesh Roy.

Thanks Nilesh

That looks good, I will give it ago this morning. 1 silly question whats ERD?? and how do I back it up??? I sure this stands for something really simple ;)

Sim

Hi LedZepRock

First off, an ERD is an Emergency Repair Disk (to create, run rdisk.exe /s from run box)

Secondly, if you have just lost small areas, try looking at PowerControls from Ontrack (Not an advert, just a very impressed end user) this looks into the edb (even corrupt) and enables you to pull out the required info.

Dave

Thanks for the info

Nilesh, that method did not work for me, still can restart the Information Store Service.

Dave, PowerControls looks great, downloaded the free version, and its really neat, problem is $950, thats like £700 for a use once util, don't think I am guna get the nod to buy that, you don't know of any programs that do the same thing for less by any chance!!

LedZepRock

Sorry, I think PowerControls was an original idea (Doesn't exist anywhere else) :)

If you don't want to pay, have you tried the warez sites?
N.B. I don't endorse those sites.

Dave

Thanks Dave

Yep I have looked about and nobody else does anything the same, it really is neat!!

I have requested to the people with the money that we buy a copy. If we had a major problem trying to restore Exchange, is to honest a joke, restore you reg, restore your SAM. Forget that, using this software means I can reinstall the machine, reinstall Exchange, restore the directory, add my connectors, and then move mailboxes from this program. And to make it better I can try this without then need to stop my current server. I think this has made the purchase worthwhile. Just have to wait now for auth to buy it!!

Anyway thanks for the tip off, you saved me a lot of stress.

Simon

Hi,

No probs. That was about the same argument I had with those holding the purse strings.

Once I pointed out the benefits & time savings, they didn't really put up much of a fight.

Dave

I researched this at length .. and managed to make it work.
I have published a FAQ here: faq10-2260

Give it a go.. let me know what you think -- and if it worked!
