I'm in the middle of a restore, and the server suddenly stopped restoring, and began skipping files. No further files were restored to the end of the job.

Help !

Were any files restored? If so, did they previously exist on the target drive?

What happens when you try to run the job again?

When you set up the job did you select to overwrite existing files, or keep newer files, or what?

Do you have equipment problems?

Is the tape good?

This list could get longer and longer, try to be more specific about the problem.

Regards,
David.

I'm restoring to a new disk. Some of the files seem to restore OK - about 180 Gb, but the final 15 Gb fails.

We had compression enabled on the old disks, and it seems as if it's the files that were compressed which are causing the issue. ( not all of the disk was compressed .... long story ). It's causing the windows agent to stop, and the restore then skips files.

The compressed part is going to be a problem. Try contacting the company who manufactured the disk software and see if they have a solution/codex. Otherwise, setup an old disk drive with the compresion software and restore to it. Then slave the drive and copy the files back onto the server. This is going to be a headache.

Regards,
David.

The disk compression was just Windows compression, on a RAID array connected to the server. We are restoring to a new RAID array with bigger disks, so don't really want to enable compression unless we can possibly help it.

Ok, what about powering up the old system on the LAN, then just copy the files over to the new RAID.

It's an idea...

The old disks are still in the server ( it's a box of disks attached to the server using SCSI - a dell PowerVault 220 ).

Unfortunately, many of the files on the original files are corrupted, due to an issue that happened after the backup that we are restoring from. Hence we are restoring from tape.

Will the tape restore back to the old drives?

Don't know about that, but we have tried to restore from another tape drive to a different server, and the system fails in the same way there too. Must be something on the tape, hence us thinking that it's the compression.

We carried out a folder by folder restore, and that seemed to work. Possibly the fact that some folders were compressed, and others were not.

Moral of the story - never use Windows compression.
