We're trying to restore Exchange 5.5 to alternate server. Is this possible?

I'm not an Exchange guru so I apologize if the information I'm giving you is vague, but we're trying to see if it is at all possible. Our need for this is to retrieve a mailbox from 2 years ago without compromising our current environment.

Thanks in advance,
simboy

With a working backup tape and another server, you should be able to restore your data. You will however, not be able to do this on your 'production' lan. You will need to build another Exchange box on that lan to restore to. Then create a .pst file containing the data you need and move that over to production. There is a great book: Managing and Maintaining Exchange Server 5.5 that gives step by step instructions of how to do this. ISBN: 0-7356-0528-9

HI,

IT IS POSSIBLE.......

Install Exchange on a different server to the same partition as that of the original, and apply the same service pack as that on the original server..
INstall the Backup agent for Exchange and apply the appropriate service packs..

Note: The Exchange organization and the site name should
be IDENTICAL to the original server...
Stop the IS and DS services.... System attendent should be running...

Now,from the restore screen, on the destination tab, uncheck
"original location" go thru the network and drill down and
highlight "Microsoft Exhange server"...

This should restore successfully...

if you have any other clarifications.. u have lotsa white papers on MS..

cheers

I have tried this same process with the PUB.EDB and have had nothing but problems. The Organization and Site Name are the same, the server name is different. Restoring with the Exchange agent reported a successful restore but I am unable to restart the IS. I ran ISINTEG and ESEUTIL against the database several times until no more errors were reported but the IS service will still not start.

2 very quick questions before I start over again....

1)The Org name appears to have a space at the end, is Exchange so picky that I must include the space?

2)The Site name is in lowercase on the old server but upper on the new restore server, again is Exchange 5.5 that picky?

Just a few config notes - Original server Exchange 5.5 SP4 running on Win2K SP2. New Server Exchange 5.5 SP4 running on Win2K SP2. Using Arcserve 2000 SP4.

HI,

The organization and the Site name is CASE and SPACE sensitive.

Check the event log to look for any specific error codes you get when u start the services.

You should be able to find Q docs on MS support

Note that the Directory Store cannot be restored to a machine with a different name but the Information Store can. You may know that but I wanted to point it out to be sure.

If you are working with a Full Offline Backup download Power Controls from , it will extract a mailbox or pub folder from the database without having to build an exchange environment.
