Hi!

How does one find out which user deleted a file on a shared folder on the server and when? Also, how do you restore that file? The server's Recycle Bin does not contain entries of deleted files for the shared folder.

Regards

In order to track who deleted what, you'll need to setup security auditing for the specific folders/shares you wish to monitor. Since Windows Server does not move files deleted over the network to the recycle bin, you're best hope of restoration is a backup. For the future, you may want to consider a 3rd party utility such as Executive Software's Undelete for network file recovery.

Thanks to both of you. Looks like Novell is leaps ahead of Windows Server in stability & features.

Nah MS just rely on third partys to provide those features wheras Novell do it themselves and charge massive fees for the addons.

Novel WAS light years way ahead of MS, but now support is an issue...

This is one of the best utils for MS Windows, VSS is limited to restoration, and as to the number of restore point you can afford to do. Executive software's answer to salvage.exe. Great product. Does up to the minute restoration, logs who deleted and the time/date. Keeps multiple revisions. Anyone granted permission can restore a file, from the server or desktops.
