Restore Data in a different location

Hello All,

I would like to restore a large amount of data (2-3 TB) on a SAN in one of our satellite offices.
Background: for our disaster recovery concept we plan to mirror our local data to another location. We use a 10Mbit line, but it takes too long for the initial mirror. What I want to do is:

- Backup the original data to tapes
- Restore it in the other office

My question is how to do that. I think at first I have to inventory the tapes (scanner –i) and restore them with a direct saveset recover. Do you have another (and / or better) idea?

This is the only way it will work.

However, for a save set recover you do not need to rebuild the file index - "scanner -m" will already do the job.

No, that is not the only way. You can avoid scanning altogether.

Just simply make your local tape drives a storage node off of your remote server. The data will be written to your local tape drives and the index information will be written to your remote server. Once the backup is finished you can ship your tapes to the remote location, load them in the your silo there and restore them. No scanning needed.

We have used this method for years.

Its all a matter of time vs. money ....

You may need a SN license but it wont necessarily cost you anything.

I imported the 4 tapes in the other office (different networker server). Now I would like to recover the savesets for 3 Clients (which doesn't exists in the other office) to one server there.

If I run

recover -f -R (name of the server I want to recover to) -S (SSID)

I receive an error that this client (which belongs to the saveset) doesn't exists or is not configured in the alias list of the backup server.

If this is fixed do I have to enter a special destination (f.e. drive letter) on the target server or will the saveset be restored to it's original location?

You should run the recover command on the client you want to have the data relocated to and not use -R if you are running a save set recover (ie not browsing and thereby skipping the scanner -i part).

You can use -d to redirect the recover instead of letting it go to the same path as it was backed up from.

the server I wan't to recover the files to is not a networker client (but it wouldn't be a problem to install the software). On the other hand ....
The drives on the other server I would like to recover to are SAN drives. I could also present them to the backup server and restore the files "localy" with a -d for redirection.

ok - before I start another question:

The savesets contains the data of more than one drive. If I restore such a set with option "-d" to my local D:\ drive would that means that the whole data of both drives will be restored to this location? I need to restore the data of one drive to another single drive (not enough space).

Hi,

a save set never cross mountpoints, so if you have backups of d: and e:, that will be saved in two different save sets. You can run several recover commands and select what ssid(s) should be relocated and to where.
