Hello all,

I just recieved a new server with AIX 5.1 installed. I need to move all the data and root files from my 4.3.3 server to the new server. I ran a Mksysb on the 4.3.3 box but i am unable to get the new server to read the tape. I have tried putting in the 4.3.3 AIX CD and still am unable to get it to load from either one. Is there something that I have missed? My boot order is:

cd0
rmt0
hdisk0

I figured this should have worked, any ideas?

Does it boot at all? Is it booting to the hdisk0 install of 5.1?

If it is:
Are you hitting the right key to use the alternate bootlist? (F5 or 5)

Have you mounted the media on the running 5.1 machine and seeing if the 5.1 OS can read them?

another little issue from the back of my mind...

I once tried an upgrade install from 4.3.3 to 5.1. It failed, and I restored 4.3.3 from mksysb. After that restored, none of my non-disk SCSI devices would work, they'd never become "available" and cfgmgr could never sense them. (this was a 4mm, an 8mm, and a cdrom). I never troubleshot it (machine eventually had a new install of 5.1 laid down). WAG is the cmos or whatever battery-backed storage there is on the system may have needed to be wiped. (I know there was a similar issue on another one of my machines between various levels of 4.)

Are you using CD# 1 of the 4.3.3 set?? Have you tried going into SMS and manually selecting the CD-ROM as the bootdevice as opposed to hitting F5 or 5 as Chapter11 mentioned??

Are you getting any error LED's? Have you tried corrupting the NVRAM??

I think we need some more information on what you have triend and what other symptoms you are experiencing...

What is your server? I think some pseries model specially the new one does not support aix 4.3.3 and later aix version..

If you are already running v5 then I dont think it will boot from a v4 mksysb tape...I ran into the same thing with a 4.3 mksysb and had to (1) boot from cd1 of the 4.3 OS media and (2) then go into SMS and and restore from backup.

I talked to software support and they did not seemed surprized that I had trouble but did not really have any good explanation either.

Well here is what is going on... With the new server 7028-6E4, i have tried to restore or load AIX 4.3.3 from either a mksysb or from CD but neither of them have worked. It sits there and says it is starting the software and then just sits. I tried this on Friday and it sat there for two days and did nothing. I am at a loss, any ideas....

It seems that p630 does not support aix 4.3.3 am trying to get the documentation where it state there that only aix 5L is supported by p630.

Is there any way to trick the system to make it think it is loading AIX 5.1 instead of AIX 4.3.3? Like starting with the AIX 5.1 CD and when it gets to the part for the install, throwing in the AIX 4.3.3 cd.
