How to restor the backup from one server to another . is there a way to backup the active directory on one server and restore it to another one.

Yes there is, but when you setup a second domain controller it will simply replicate the data from the old controller to the new controller.

What goal are you trying to reach?

I tring to upgrade my domain form 2000 to 2003 but not a typical proccess. I want to backup the domian and restor it to a new hardwar so I can copy the users and all thing from one to another.

But in this thread

you have been given a link that shows you how to upgrade your domain to windows 2003.

Are you saying you don't want to take the easier route of upgrading and instead try to copy your AD to entirely new hardware???? Upgrading by bringing 2003 dcs into your existing AD infrastructure is the best way to upgrade.

Plus I don't think you could actually backup AD from Windows 2000 and restore onto a 2003 server, someone please correct me if I'm wrong....

You can certainly backup AD using ntbackup and restore onto different hardware but I'm pretty sure that the OS and patch levels need to be the same on the new server as they were on the old servers. There is lots about restoring AD to different hardware if you google for it, but I'm positive the above is correct....

I'm fairly sure that you can't backup a 2000 AD database and restore it to a 2003 AD database. The schemas are different.

Simply bring up a Windows 2003 server, and dcpromo that server as a DC, then after a couple of days dcpromo out the old DC.

Trying to restore a 2000 AD to a 2003 server is not anything you want to try and do.

Follow the advice already given to you in your other thread as trying anything else is, sorry, stupid, given the information you've provided us.
