I have created a resource (me).

I have created 3 tasks.

Task 1 = Design Page
Task 2 = Build Page
Task 3 = promote page

Task 2 is dependent on task 1 - it can start once task 1 is complete
task 3 is completely independent

I have allocated durations of 1 day each. I have allocated all tasks to the same resource.

On the gant chart task 2 occurs after task 1

However task 3 occurs at the same time as task 1

But it is the same resource working on both tasks.

How do I tell microsoft project that a resource can only work on one task at once???

I'm really stuck!

Transparent,

First, I have to question why "Promote Page" doesn't come after "Build Page"? However, I will assume that there is some reason for this so my second question is, can you reorganize your activities into a more logical order or combine the activities? It's important to strike an appropriate balance between too detailed and too broad.

Those issues aside, you can use Project's resource leveling feature (USE MANUAL - NOT AUTOMATIC) to move the start date of an activity based on your resource usage. Project is going to rightly assume that a resource can work on more than one task at a time and it is your responsibility to review the resource graph, identify resource over-allocations, and then level the resources (Tools\Resource Leveling). Keep in mind that resource leveling will assume that the projects on top should happen before the projects below.

Good luck.
