I just started using Microsoft Project 2000 and I need to know how to put in a set amount of hours of work, over my choice of days, with the utilization of the resource at 50%.

I don't want it to calculate how many days or how many hours it is going to take, I want to be able to SAY how many hours over my amount of days.

EX:
Paul can only work on this project 50% of his time. A certain task is going to take 48 hours, but over the course of 3 weeks. While he is doing this task, he will be doing other tasks from the same project.

Is that at all possibe to do with keeping his utilization at 50%?

Ignore that up there ^, it didn't come out as planned and I hardly know what I am talking about.
Let me try this again.

I want to be able to set the amount of hours it takes for a task to be completed, without having Project change the dates.

Let's say Paul will be working on a task of 8 hours, with 50% utilization. Instead of having Project tell me that it is going to take 2 working days, I want to be able to change it to how ever many working days I want because Paul will be working on other tasks on the same day.

Does that make any sense at all?

It makes absolutely no sense at all.

Your question suggests that you want to put a resource at 50%, set the amount of work and then set the duration.

You will continue asking unanswerable questions until you understand that Work = Units * Duration. If you set the task as fixed work and change the units then you will alter the duration. It's an equation; you can't arbitrarily set all three elements into an inequality.

If you don't see your problem then stick to Excel.

ok, thanks. I figured it out from your equation explanation.
