I recently replaced a hardrive on my HP (don't know model but is three years old). I installed a Maxtor 60gb. I noticed that after I intalled a copy of Windows 98 (which was originally on there) that my modem was not being recognized, there is no volume, and that my monitor will not accept anything over 16 colors. I attempted to install a prodigy cd for internet use and was told that my computer needs to accept 600 X 800. This used to be an option before my computer was hit by an electrical surge. Do I need a new card (what type) or just adjust a setting. I noticed that my icons look a little bigger than I remember. Thank you.

You will need to install the drivers for your video card, which is what is limiting you to 16 colors right now.

Hopefully you have a CD with your computer with the motherboard and or peripheral drivers on it.

If you have no such disks, then you will need to download the drivers off the company's website. If you do not know what video card or modem you have, you may need to take the computer case off and take a look on the card. ~Apex1x

I actually have the recovery disks which came with the computer. However, it does not load automatically. I tried to load it manually through the MY Computer icon but was not able to find the command which tells the cd to load. Do I need a new recovery disk?

thanks

Usually with a recovery disk, you boot off of the CD when your computer starts and it will reinstall everything.
You just need the drivers off it though if they are available.
Do you know how to add and or update drivers through control panel? ~Apex1x

I attempted to update the drivers but my computer said the drivers are installed and that they are running o.k. Do I just need to add new cards? I think I may just take it to Best Buy and have them deal with it. I wish I could have figured this thing out though. Installing a new hardrive was a major accomplishment for me. I guess that is how we learn.

Thanks

If you only have 16 colors, you have the wrong driver for the video card.

What video card did you install? ~Apex1x

I went ahead and sent my computer to Best Buy to have them set it up. I was getting too frustrated with the whole thing. Thank you tremendously for all your help.
