resolution in Photoshop less than QT viewer

Hello all -
Maybe someone will have some insight into this...

I saved still frames from miniDV as photoshop files. When I open them directly by double clicking the icon from the hard drive, they look great (they are being opened by Quicktime Picture Viewer). However, when I open the same file in Photoshop, there is obvious "pixilation" (especially where tones change). I am using Photoshop 6. I've set the photoshop page up for RGB (the color settings are U.S. Prepress Defaults.)
The image looks soo much better (smoother) when viewed from the Picture Viewer. Any idea why? Any idea how to get it to look so good in Photoshop?

From which program did you save still miniDV frames as Photoshop files? and I assume you are talking native Photoshop .PSD files and not JPEG, TIFF, etc. If you are cutting and pasting into Photoshop from QTV you may be losing quality. Maybe try using the QT authoring software to "save frame as image..." or save the file as JPEG or TIFF instead of PSD. Or try a different DV capture software - there are a few freewares available.

MiniDV is 720x480 resolution usually, so you are already limited by that. Probably your image is interlaced also, i.e. every other line of pixels is from alternating frames. Maybe try the Filters -> Other -> Deinterlace with interpolation on. Make sure you are viewing the image at 100% magnification in Photoshop.

The de-interlace filter helped quite a bit. Also, I found out that when making a still frame from the miniDV it needs to be resized (640 x 480 pixels). Doing that, and upping the resolution to 300 seemed to help.

It still doesn't look quite as good in PS as it does in the QT viewer, but it is much better than it was!
