Is it possible to reserve specific lots of inventory, or portions of a specific lot, for specific order number(s)?

thanks

You can reserve lotted/serialized or binned inventory (in the system) by using Hard Allocations. This is a global setup decision that needed to be made during IM setup. There are processes for changing from Soft Allocation to Hard Allocation, however, there are several considerations and potential limititations in practice given your exact circumstances. Please describe in detail what you are wanting to accomplish.

erp:

thanks for the response. Looking at the user guide it seems that I want "soft allocation" however registering for Advanced Distribution is greek to me.

Our situation is this: we are now out to very long lead times from suppliers and would like to allocate certain inventory to certain orders. Again, the user guide makes this sound like a huge hassle: ie, if quantity entered is more than qty on hand then there is a default to qty on hand, etc. etc.

is it possible to change to a soft or hard allocation method now that the system is long since up and running? Can anyone speak to the benefits/hassles of soft and hard allocations (esp. vs. the current no allocation)?

Thanks

You do have soft allocations occurring, at the item-loction level. Hard allocations occur at the specific serial or lot level.

In Macola, finished goods are allocated when a customer order is taken, while components are allocated when a production order is released. Is this what you want?

Take a look at the Confirm Pick option in OE. This does not “reserve” or allocate the inventory the way that hard allocate does but it might fill your needs. This option will actually issue the lots during the Picking process. If the incorrect lots were selected you can still change them during the billing process.

Another option would be to contact Bruce at I was talking to him a while back and he was telling me about a new process that they had developed for picking that works similar to the hard allocation process for a soft allocation customer. You might use this process reserve your serial lot inventory.

Good luck
Tom
