Hi,
recently I had an opportunity to talk to MS trainer about SSIS, he told me that an advantage of .dtsx packages is that it's possible to run them from any computer - I just have to prepare a package and then I can distribute it to other computers and run it.
Some things are a mystery to me though.
How is it possible to run a package since .dtsx is not an executable extension? I searched a little bit, and found that I need dtexec utility, is it right? If so, does that mean I have to install SQL Server to run .dtsx packages?
Could someone explain me that, please? :)

Cheers,
Mike

In order to run an SSIS package you need to have the SQL GUI installed on the machine or the SQL Server Integration Services. In all you need is basic functionally then the SQL GUI is all that you need. If you need full SSIS functionallity then you would need to have the actual Integration Services installed.

Thank you for the answer. Than means, that if I have a package which is prepared on a machine with SSIS installed and all I want to do is run it on another computer - no modifications - SQL GUI is enough. The package will be fully functional, but I will not be able to redesign it. Did I get it right?

Cheers,
Mike

If you have the GUI you can edit it, or execute it. However there may be come functalility which isn't available without the full integration services installed.
