I am very new to InDesign, a Quark user for more years than I can count. What fonts are required to be in the Fonts Folder inside the InDesign Folder? Right now there are 181 fonts, all OpenType. I tried deleting them but then InDesign would not load - put them back and everything is just fine. I use Font Reserve for my font collection but planning to change to Linotype Font Explorer X. I would really like to get the font list shorter by eliminating a bunch of fonts that will not be used in a document.

The Adobe apps expect to see those fonts and you really have no choice. If you're going to be using a font management program, you really don't need to worry about them. Those are just available to the Adobe applications. They won't, however, show up in your font program list, or in non-Adobe applications.

Remember, to move quickly through your font list, just type the font name in the font box in the Character palette. You can also turn off CS 2's WYSIWYG font menu in the Preferences to speed scrolling up a bit.

Thanks for your info and tip. I try to keep active fonts to a minimum and I turned off WYSIWYG immediately when I first started working with CS2. It would be nice to eliminate Birch, Brush Sript, Calfish Script, Chaparral, Charcoal, Charlemagne and etc. - fonts that will only be used once in 12 or more months.

...my fonts folder within the indesign folder is empty of fonts and the program functions OK for me...

...in mac os x, fonts are stored in various locations that your applications will look at to load what it finds when you start up your programs...

...there is a great free font manager as you have mentioned...

...with fontexplorer, there is a tool built in that will clean out your font locations, leaving those that were installed and needed by your system install...

...it does a pretty good job for free...

...fonts are stored here on mac os x:

System Domain - System/Library/Fonts
Local Domain - Library/Fonts
User Domain - Users/[name]/Library/Fonts
Classic Domain(Mac OS 9) - System Folder/Fonts
Network Domain - Network/Library/Fonts
Application Fonts - Library/Application Support

...the font hierachy is as follows, it is good practice not to have duplicate fonts across the system, if there are they will be opened from the following locations in this order:

1. Library/Application Support
2. Users/[name]/Library/Fonts
3. Library/Fonts
4. Network/Library/Fonts
5. System/Library/Fonts
6. Classic Domain(Mac OS 9)/System Folder/Fonts

...be careful manually removing fonts from the System/Library/Fonts area, as essential fonts are stored for system stability, best to leave well alone...

...fonts used for you adobe applications and no other application are stored here:

/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts

...with the adobe fonts:

/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts

Do not remove the folder called "Reqrd" and it's containing fonts, otherwise this will cause you problems...

...all other fonts in the "/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts" can be removed and stored elsewhere.

...i think your indesign failed to load because the 'Reqrd' folder from within this location has been removed, all those other opentype fonts can be moved:

/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts/Reqrd

Thanks Andrew. Indeed that is what happened. I copied the fonts to another hard drive than trashed everything in the CS2 fonts folder without realizing that there was a "Required" folder in the bunch. I played around with the fonts again last Friday and realized my mistake, so things are now the way I want them to be. However your System Domain Fonts list is interesting. I am running Mac OS X v10.3.9 and I have Geneva.dfnt, Keyboard.dfont, LastResort.dfont, Lucida Grande.dfont and Monaco.dfont. in my System Domaine Fonts Folder. Did a search for the Helvetica and Times LT MM and came up empty. Maybe those are required with the new upgrade? Anyway, thanks a big bunch again. This was helpful to me and hopefully to others who are taking the same leap from Quark to CS2.

...i believe that the Helvetica LT MM and Times LT MM versions you query are part of OS X Tiger 10.4...

Andrew

...oh yes, the people changing from quark to indesign is really going with speed in my experience, i'm sure you will be happy with indesign as you already know quark very well, the support for great import of DCS files to composite output is great and the export to pdf is excellent too, not forgetting the power of nested styles and mapping colours in the ink manager, superb!!...
