I'm trying to get samba to require strong passwords (e.g., min length, case, digits, etc.). I've been trying to get smbpasswd to honor pam_cracklib, but it just seems to ignore any changes I make to /etc/pam.d/samba...

Any suggestions on where to look? I've been googling for hours with no luck.

Tried setting up unix passwd sync, but with that on none of my users can get a successful result out of smbpasswd... The error has turned up relating to chat issues, but I've tried to customize my chat script and still no go... I'd rather not sync anyway...

You may need to recompile samba to use another authentication method. Go google that.
